Ruby is the name given to gem sapphire  in the red color range.  It is usually considered to be the most prized  of the colored gemstones.  It is the birthstone for the month of July. 

East African Ruby Cabochons

We have a number of rubies from east Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, etc.).  They are cabochon cut with beautiful color. We have a good selection in a variety of grades for any budget.  We will be adding more all the time, so if you don't see just what you are looking for, check back or just email me.  If we don't have what you need, we have a representative in Africa that can probably locate it for you.  Also email me if you are interested in rough or  buying in quantity at wholesale pricing.

As a general guideline, I have graded them as follows:

B = Solid stones with good color but with obvious inclusions, like black spots or fissures. Color maybe uneven.
A = Good color, fewer, less obvious  inclusions
AA = Good even color and only very minor inclusions
AAA = Great color, somewhat translucent, no face-up visible inclusions

Many show some "asterism" but don't have distinct 5 pointed stars, just a bright flash that moves across the stone as it is turned in the light.
