Sapphires,
along with rubies, emeralds and diamonds are considered "Precious" gemstones.
One of the most sought after gems since the beginning of recorded history,
sapphires are a member of the corundom family. Although usually thought of
as a blue gemstone, sapphires can be almost any color. Red corundom gems
are called rubies. All other colors are referred to as sapphires.
They display great brilliance and scintillation and are extremely hard.
