What is the difference between Gold, Gold Filled (GF),
and Gold Plate (GP)? Gold usually means
that the item is a gold alloy and is usually followed by 10K, 14K, 18K, 24K etc.
24 Karat gold is pure gold. 10K is 10/24ths gold, 14K is 14/24ths gold. Beware though, that if there isn't a Karat designation, when some dealers say
gold, they are simply talking about the color! Gold Fill
jewelry has a relatively thick layer of gold, usually 1/20th of the thickness
of the metal. It might be 14K, 20K or 24K. It will last many years
and look just like gold. Gold plate is a very thin layer of gold
(a few atoms thick!) that is bonded to the base metal. While it looks
like gold when new, and is very inexpensive, the gold wears through after you
wear it a while.
What is Sterling Silver? Sterling
silver is the same as .925 fine silver, which means it is 92.5% silver,
alloyed with other metals.
